Venlafaxine

(Effexor XR®) tablets

Venlafaxine (Effexor XR®) is an anti-depressant that can also be used to improve your mood, sleep energy levels, appetite, and restore your interest in daily living. It can also be used to treat symptoms of menopause or hot flashes in women being treated for breast cancer. It may decrease fear, anxiety and unwanted thoughts. You may need to take this medication for several weeks before it starts to work, and your doctor may need to increase the dose.

How do I take this medicine?
  • You should take venlafaxine on a regular schedule, (at the same time every day), according to your prescription.

  • You can take this medicine with or without food, with water or another beverage.

  • Swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew or crush the capsule. If  you cannot swallow the capsule, you may sprinkle the medication over applesauce and swallow.

  • Continue taking your venlafaxine, even if you feel well. Medications such as venlafaxine work in the background to improve your mood and overall well-being. If you want to discontinue the medication, your doctor will help you taper off of the medication over a few weeks

  • If you forget to take this medicine: Skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule with your next dose. Never take extra medication to make up for your missed dose.

What are the side effects?

All drugs may cause side effect, however, many people using this medication have no side effects or only minor side effects. The most common side effects of this medication are:

  • Sleepiness

  • Tiredness or weakness

  • Headache

  • Nausea or upset stomach

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Dry mouth

  • Low appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Sweating

  • Change in sexual function

 

Rarely, venlafaxine can cause an abnormal heart rhythm called a prolonged QT interval, allergic reaction or a very rare reaction with fever, sweating, confusion and severe muscle stiffness. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any severe or unusual symptom.

How can I be safe when taking this medicine?
  • Follow the prescription instructions. Ask your care team if you have any questions about the instructions. Do not take a higher dose or take it more often than prescribed.

  • Avoid driving until you have a good sense of how this medication affects you.

  • Caution drinking alcohol as you may be more sensitive to its effects
